CHEF DANIEL MONDOK'S PORTLAND GUIDE
Morning
COFFEE | Extracto and Heart Coffee Roasters
There's a very competitive artisanal coffee market in Portland and both of these spots nail it with their house roasts, the quality and craftsmanship at the barista leve,l and also their spaces. It just feels good to be in both of their shops, so the whole experience is great. I like to be caffeinated, and at either one I'll do a Red Eye, which is a shot of espresso poured into a black coffee.

BREAKFAST | Milk Glass Market
This is a simple, classic patisserie where everything is done by hand. It's just such an elegant spot located in North East Portland with pretty much nothing else around it. I love the buttermilk biscuit sandwiches here. I'’ll do the Cheddar Biscuit with herbed egg, applewood bacon, and smoked salmon; and my son likes the Kiddo Biscuit with scrambled egg and bacon. It's really just a great way to start any day.

Lunch
VIETNAMESE PHO | HA & VL
I love to come here on Monday's, specifically for the crab flake soup. It's amazing! They generally only make two soups a day and this particular one usually runs out by noon. Locals know this is the best place for soup in SE Portland, so you have to get here early.

TACO TRUCK | Pastorcillos
CHEESE | Briar Rose Creamery
BREWERY | Wolves & People
One of the best parts about the Pastorcillos taco truck is that it's in wine country. Being able to go 30 minutes southwest of Portland and enjoy some of the best wines, in my opinion, is pretty great. Pastorcillos is normally a pit stop for me in-between visiting some wine makers, my pig farmer, eating cheese at Briar Rose Creamery, having a beer at Wolves and People, and then stopping at the food truck for four fantastic tacos - for only $4. What a treat! These ridiculously good tacos are made by a sweet little lady and her daughter. Pastorcillos is totally off the map, unless you are a lucky local or a very lucky tourist.

Dinner
FRENCH | Le Pigeon
Such an amazing, avant garde restaurant with the kitchen situated right in the middle of the dining room. It's a small place with limited seating, so it's difficult to get a reservation. If you can get in, you have to go. The food is amazing and they have an incredible wine and beer selection.

Late Night Drinks
TIKI | Hale Pele
I love this spot for its cool vibe and amazing drinks. It's a traditional tiki bar that hearkens back to the 1950's. They have big scorpion bowls for sharing, drinks in coconuts and pineapples, and a massive rum selection. There's also a pushbutton waterfall thunderstorm that's very cool and tropical. This is how we deal with our weather here, we go to Hale Pele and pretend we are in another climate.

ASIAN | Departure Restaurant and Lounge
Gregory Gourdet is the chef here and a long-time friend. I love coming here to have some of his food or just have drinks with friends. I'm generally a whiskey and beer kind of fellow. This is a great place to enjoy a drink and an incredible view of downtown Portland, with an almost 360 degree view. It's pretty fantastic.

The Mission is one of San Francisco's oldest neighborhoods, dating back to the 1776. This historic district has the oldest building in the city, Mission Dolores, but this is a neighborhood with modern culinary sensibilities. You'll find older school taquerias mixed with modern Chinese, new school coffee, and modern chocolates.
