Downtown Los Angeles is the urban part of this suburban sprawl of a city strung together by freeways. Instead of manicured lawns and trimmed hedges, there is grit, grime and even a skid row. No longer is it just office workers who empty out by sundown. Downtown has become a destination. People come here to see art, hear music and eat and drink, even after the sun goes down.
Here are suggestions for your 24 hour visit all recommended by local chefs, sommeliers and bartenders. Also check our Santa Monica/Venice guide.

LATE NIGHT
Japanese Ramen | Daikokuya
Make sure you put your name of the clipboard paper or you may never get a table.
"It’s kind of like the heavy hitter and a lot of people are trying to find new places, but to me, it’s still the best. I get the Tonkatsu, which has breaded pork cutlet. Then there is this thing called kotteri, where they add a splash of this liquid from the pork back fat and boiled it in and it just has so much depth of flavor, it’s amazing."
Bartender / restaurateur Noah Ellis , formerly of Red Medicine
"The best spicy miso ramen ever for under $10. What’s great about ramen is that something so filling and flavorful is very affordable. It will be the sign of the end of the world when a bowl of ramen is not cheaper than $12."
