Coffee & Pastries | Climpson & Sons

They have all the gear for your coffee geek fantasies and roast their own beans. They also have tea, hot chocolate and pastries. Also visit Climpson’s Arch where their roastery is located, just up the road on Helmsley Place. It’s open Thursday through Sunday and in addition the roastery is a fully licensed venue for dining, drinking, and music.

“When I go to Broadway Market in the morning, I'll get a coffee from Climpson & Sons. They roast their own beans. Then I wonder around to get a look at what food is on offer today.” - Wine Director Courtney Stebbings of Lyle’s

SHOPPING THE MARKET

Saturdays | Broadway Market

This market has been a part of Hackney since the 1890s. On the weekend, there are rows of vendors selling produce, baked goods, oysters, smoked salmon, sandwiches, coffee, cheese and vintage clothing.

“If I go in the morning, I get a coffee from Climpson and Sons, who roast their own beans. I love to take advantage of the samples and I usually end up with something sweet to enjoy with my coffee. There is nothing better than dunking a cookie in your coffee. My goal is to pick things up for an antipasti-style dinner. Broadway Market is one of the only places where I can get wild boar sausage and smoked scamorza cheese, two of my favorite things on earth. I also stop into Noble Liquor for an amazing suggestion on wine or craft beer. If I am having lunch, there are two options from the food stalls, either a hog roast sandwich or one of the little booths that make roast beef sandwiches in a yorkshire pudding. Then it's a beer or two or three at the Cat and Mutton!” - Wine Director Courtney Stebbings of Lyle’s

“Great place to shop on a Saturday. I like to buy from Violet Cakes. She used to be the pastry chef at Chez Panisse. There is Chegworth Valley from Kent. They have an apple orchard, like apple juice producers, and now grow fantastic strawberries, gooseberries, which not many people grow and really amazing raspberries, tomatoes, and out of control good salad leaves.” - Chef James Lowe of Lyle’s

“On Saturdays, I like to come here to shop. I like Wild Game Co, they're from Scotland and sell interesting meat. I buy venison from them.” - Chef James Ferguson of the Beagle

“It's just really great. It's an American bakery owned by Claire Ptak, who used to be a Chez Panisse pastry chef.” - Chef James Ferguson of the Beagle

In addition to the market, Claire has a shop: 47 Wilton Way, London E8 3ED, United Kingdom | T: +44.(0)20.7275.8360

Fruit & Veg | Chegworth Valley

The sells organic fruit, vegetables and apple juice. They sell at Broadway market and also have a farm store in Notting Hill.

“They have an apple orchard and are apple juice producers, which started about thirty years ago. They have set aside more land for growing fruit and vegetables and they do fantastic strawberries, gooseberries (which not many people grow) and really amazing raspberries, tomatoes, and out of control good salad leaves.” - Chef James Lowe of Lyle’s

Fish | Fin and Flounder

Stop into their seafood shop to buy fresh fish, wine, herbs and deli items or at their stand at the weekend Broadway Market, where they sell sandwiches.

“Unlike other fishmongers, Richard doesn’t hold back or play safe and he tries to find unusual products and teaches his customers how to cook and eat what they buy. It’s not unusual to find live prawns still jumping, live razor clams, monkfish livers, or perhaps fresh cuttlefish in their shop, all beautifully presented and very high quality. The shop itself is really cute and sells a couple of extra things – interesting wine choices and cooking products like saffron, fish roe, paprika, and chorizos - fantastic friends of fish.” - Chef Nuno Mendes of Chiltern Firehouse

“It’s a one stop shop for art books, as well as design, travel and good magazines. I can get Apartamento, The Gourmand and a massive Cy Twombly book at the same time. Their selection is really great.” - Florian Tonello & Milena Bucholz formerly of 259 Hackney Road Wine Shop

Wine & Spirits | Noble Fine Liquor

Small, independent wine store featuring a well-curated selection of naturally-made wines and craft beer.

“I love the passion behind this shop. It is owned by two guys who don't come from a wine background, but their passion is very reflective in their selection. It’s a broad boutique selection and they do a lot of tasting, so it’s very interactive. It’s a good place if someone is just starting out, because they have a lot of information to guide you. They do some really great craft beers as well.” - Wine Director Courtney Stebbings of Lyle’s

“If you like esoteric selections of natural wines and knowledgeable purveyors then this is the place for you. Liam and company have an undoubted passion for what they sell, which really rubs off on you whenever you enter.” - Restaurateurs Tom Bell & Ed Wyand of Verden

Cat & Mutton

Originally called the Cattle & Shoulder of Mutton, it's been an East-End fixture since the 1600s. The name is a little catchier these days and the place was gussied up in 2003. The food is very classic English pub grub and the drinks are brews, ciders and wine.

“For a beer or two or three after shopping at Broadway Market.” - Wine Director Courtney Stebbings of Lyle’s

Overlooking London Fields with a large list of beer and serving pub snacks like burgers, fried chicken, ribs, freshly baked breads and a weekly Sunday roast.

“I'll pop in here for a pint. They don’t really sell craft beers, but it's really nice because you sit outside near the park. For food, you can have sides.” - Chef James Ferguson of the Beagle

The Cock Tavern

A pub taken over by the owners of the Southampton Arms in Gospel Oak. They produce their own beer called Howling Hops beer in very small batches and for snacks, they offer jars of pickled eggs, Scotch eggs, and pork pies.

Coffee, Drinks, Pop-up Food | Climpson’s Arch

The Arch is where the roastery is located. It’s also a multi-purpose event space and they rotate pop-up restaurants. This winter they host Som Saa, cooking up lesser-known dishes from the Northern and North-Eastern provinces of Thailand. This past summer they team up with street food barbecue folks Lucky Chip. Stop by for food, beer, wine, cocktails, and single origin coffee.

“I come here for coffee and in the summer they have food pop-ups. At the moment Lucky Chip has a residency here and last summer it was Burnt Endz.” - Chef Nuno Mendes of Chiltern Firehouse

Cafe & Wine Bar | Rawduck [Temp Closed]

The little sibling of Ducksoup is a cafe by day and wine bar by night. Stop in for breakfast buns from Violet Cakes, sandwiches from E5 Bakehouse and coffee from Caravan.

“It is down the street from our flat, but I would go here even if it was across town. It is the sister space to Duck Soup and serves up a great natural wine list with simple plates that are all made on a panini machine. It is pretty remarkable.” - Pastry Chef Claire Ptak of Velvet Cakes

“A lot of the Vietnamese restaurants serve similar dishes, but this one is a bit more interesting, things like beef tendon and tripe. I like to eat food that I don't cook, so I can enjoy it on a different level.” - Chef James Ferguson of the Beagle
