New Smyrna Beach is a small beach town located on the Atlantic coast. New Smyrna Beach Farmers Market

There are dueling farmers markets on Saturdays mornings in New Smyrna Beach. The original one is located downtown and the beachside one is located in the Norwood's parking lot. The original has a larger array of vendors, but both sell local Florida produce.

"Just west of New Smyrna Beach is the breadbasket of Central Florida which is Samsula. You get a lot of farmers that come and sell the produce that they grow. In both of our restaurants, we use a lot of local produce and seafood and a lot of the guys we deal with are at both markets. A couple of the farmers we work with are Green Flamingo Farms (she is very dedicated to her organic produce) and Barefoot Farmer (they all farm barefooted)."

Grab a sandwich made on a fresh baked baguette from Mon Delice and head to the beach for a picnic. They've been baking fresh breads in New Smyrna Beach since 1976. Acquired in 1992, by pastry chef Serge Sorese, who grew up in Provence.

THE BEACH

While New Smyrna Beach might be a small town, there are 13 miles of beach to play on, which means you can find the perfect spot to drive, park, bike, surf, fish, and swim. If you don't want to worry about getting run over by a car on the beach, the traffic free zones are north of the jetty of Smyrna Dunes Park and below 27th Avenue South.

PLACES TO VISIT & THINGS TO DO

Beyond the 13 miles of beach, there are a number of local sights to visit. At the north end of the island is Smyrna Dunes Park with 73 acres surrounded by water on three sides. You'll find dog beach, the Atlantic Ocean, the inlet with a view of Lighthouse Point, a dunes walkway, and guided nature walks. At the southern end is the Canaveral National Seashore, which isn't really in New Smyrna Beach, but you can only get there through it. It includes the beach, Mosquito Lagoon, and dunes. It is one of the longest expanses of undeveloped land along Florida's East Coast. Eldora State House is a historic site in the Canaveral National Seashore and is one of the best examples of earlier life along the Mosquito Lagoon.

"If you want to see really old school, go down and visit the Eldora State House, which is where the original settlement was. I come down here often. It is really cool to see the old pictures and the actual house which is still standing. You can imagine what is must have been like without air conditioning. And what the bugs must have been like. But I bet the fishing was really good."

SUNSET

Some of the best places to see the sunset in New Smyrna Beach are facing the Intracoastal Waterway, not on the east-facing beach. If you are out on the beach near the inlet, just keep walking round past the jetty and watch the sunset over the mainland from the west side of Smyrna Dunes Park.
